Liposuction is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the India. It is also called liposculpture, lipoplasty, and suction-assisted lipectomy. Liposuction helps when a person is physically fit and diets well but is unable to lose fat deposit that is localized and might have a genetic susceptibility or hormonal issue. One of the most traditional methods of liposuction is the tumescent liposuction. Tumescent liposuction is a body sculpting and contouring procedure. Tumescent liposuction involves a large volume of fluid containing local aesthetic and adrenaline being injected into the tissue. This solution shrinks capillaries and hardens or “tumesces” fat which is then removed. The tumescent liposuction technique was designed to reduce bleeding during liposuction and results in faster recovery. We at Allure MedSpa use tumescent liposuction can remove fat from more or less all parts of the body, including the face, neck, chin, breast, stomach, hips, flanks, back, inner and outer thighs, buttocks, knees, calves and ankles.
The word ‘tumescent’ means enlarged and firm. Tumescent liposuction involves injecting dilute lidocaine (local anesthetic) and epinephrine (capillary constrictor) into subcutaneous fat, which results in the targeted tissue becoming engorged and firm, or tumescent. The tumescent liposuction technique removes the need for general anaesthesia, narcotics and sedatives. After the solution is injected, the surgeon makes a tiny cut in the skin and inserts a cannula to remove the excess fat. Using back and forth movements, the fat is sucked through the tube and drained. A compression garment is then worn to help the skin contract and heal.
Tumescent liposuction facilitates profound vasoconstriction (shrinkage of capillary blood vessels). This results from the tumescent penetration of water down epinephrine into subcutaneous fat. This helps the smooth progress of liposuction and the procedure can be done with virtually no blood loss. Vasoconstriction setbacks lidocaine assimilation, the local anaesthetic remains in place in the fat for many hours. This long-lasting anaesthesia allows surgery for up to 10 hours after penetration, and gives 24 to 36 hours of considerable postoperative analgesia.
Recovery post tumescent liposuction varies from person to person. The local anaesthetic injected during the procedure lasts for about 24 hours following surgery. This significantly reduces post-operative soreness. While strenuous exercise is not recommended, the patients can resume their routine life within three to seven days after the procedure. Most of the swelling goes down in two weeks or less.
